Fulfil Your Khums with Confidence

NRF ensures your Khums reaches those who are entitled to it, with full transparency, scholarly oversight, and careful distribution.

"Your contribution provided the education my daughter needed to break the cycle of poverty."

— Amina, Recipient

An Obligatory Fifth

Khums requires a Muslim to pay one-fifth (20%) of their annual surplus income. It is derived from the Qur'an (Surah al-Anfal, 8:41) and is a fundamental obligation in Shia Islam, distinct from Zakat.

Khums is divided into two equal portions. Sahm al-Imam (the Imam's share) is dedicated to the service of Islam and the Muslim community as guided by qualified religious authority. Sahm al-Sada (the share of the Sayyids) is distributed to needy descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) who are poor, orphaned, or stranded travellers.

Paying Khums is an act of worship, a purification of wealth, and a fulfilment of one's duty to God and to the community.

Spiritual Penance

An Act of Atonement

Khums is obligatory on every adult Muslim (Shia tradition) who has surplus income at the end of their Khums year. Your Khums year begins on the date you first earned income and recurs annually.

If, on your Khums date, you have savings or surplus wealth remaining after deducting all legitimate living expenses, Khums is due. This includes money in bank accounts, cash, investments, and the value of unused goods purchased during the year.

If your expenses equalled or exceeded your income, no Khums is due.

How to Calculate

01

Step 1

Determine your Khums date (the annual date you assess your finances).

02

Step 2

Calculate your total assets: savings, cash, bank balances, investments, and unused goods.

03

Step 3

Deduct legitimate expenses: housing, food, clothing, transport, medical costs, education, debts, and any previously Khums-paid amounts.

04

Step 4

Calculate 20% of the surplus. This is your total Khums liability.

05

Step 5

Divide into two equal portions: half is Sahm al-Imam, half is Sahm al-Sada.

The Two Portions

Your Khums is traditionally split into two equal halves

Sahm al-Imam (50%)

Dedicated to the service of Islam and the welfare of the Muslim community. In the absence of the Twelfth Imam, this portion is entrusted to a Marja' al-Taqlid or distributed under their authorisation. NRF directs Sahm al-Imam under scholarly guidance toward programmes serving the Muslim community, including orphan care, education, and community infrastructure.

Sahm al-Sada (50%)

Distributed to needy Sayyids who are poor, orphaned, or stranded in travel. NRF identifies eligible Sayyid recipients across Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, and East Africa and distributes directly to those who qualify.
